I think you are both correct, I believe in many circumstances the origins of
a religion had very spiritual roots but often became corrupted later,.. also,
some religions were created for reasons of control from the very beginning,..
although, I should say, it's not so much the religions, but the controlling
factions behind them.. sometimes they borrow scripture, and make it into a
new religion
The best way to understand it, in my opinion, is to try to stop looking for
absolute good and evil's, try to see that each religion or sect or faction,
is really a conglomeration of personalities and different intentions, each of
them is also a sort of archtype that represents thousands or millions of
other minds who are moving in a similiar direction, once again :) like a
mandala
