The energy is very real--I've felt it strongly for nearly 6 years now.
Luckily there are various means to release the energy when it gets too
intense. I use Hatha Yoga to diffuse it, and I often place my tongue to my
palette to recirculate the energy. There are lots of other grounding
techniques under polls at the kundalini-gateway.org site.
I was having tea with a friend the other day and felt an energy surge. I
shook my head to release the energy, and he told me that the head shake was
something that happened when he and his girl friend practice tantra. So we
got into a discussion of the different kinds of "spiritual" energy. It
caused me to reread Kurt's essay on prana vs K that Susan recently referred
to: http://kundalini-gateway.org/kurt/k-faq.html and I find I pretty much
agree with Swami Tirth's take:
"When posed with question as to how to distinguish between pleasant
sensations that show some pranic-activity in the spine and the much more
powerful experience Swami Shivom Tirth said that the difference is not in the
nature of the activity but in the consciousness that observes it."
I hear voices on rare occasions. Usually they simply give me
"understandings" and not advice! :)) But the energy does certainly cause me
to feel somewhat "stoned," so it is difficult to think clearly in ordinary
terms. Usually I can concentrate when needed to, though.
It's always wise to "do one's work" despite the fact that it may prove to be
unnecessary. I think it's important to take these voices with a grain of
salt to a certain extent.
