Cool, besides using another persons face as the 'mirror' I've experimented a bit with this as well, but didn't realize that it might be useful that was usefull. Thanks also for the insights about the number of faces getting fewer as clearing progresses.
Once I tried this directly on the face of someone leading a group. He had said that he might channel an old wise native american while he was leading a guided meditation and that some people would see another face superimpose over his. I did this to see if I could see the other face.
After I I had been gazing at his face for a while (hadn't seen anything, and I don't remember him channeling anything either) he opened his eyes and gave me a direct look and then closed his eyes to continue. Afterwards he talked for what seemed to be a long time about something that boiled down to how it wasn't ethical for people to be doing any kind of 'invasive' thing. He then connected to the light more directly and asked me what I saw. I told him, and he said yes, he was essentially a channel for the light. So if you do it with other people's faces they may be surprised at your boldness. He's the only person who's mentioned it though.
When I started doing this sort of 'trick' with mirrors I was cautioned by my teacher at the time to stop if the images began to leave the mirror.
The same excercise can be done with a body length mirror: I was wandering around an unfamiliar university campus once, just following my guidance, and saw a grail shaped building: round and narrow at the bottom like the step of a chalice. I thought this was significant because of connections between the grail and what I was working on so I wandered right in there. I found myself in an empty lecture hall, the wall behind the stage was one huge back projection screen: it looked like a black mirror. I stepped up onto the stage and did a ceremony that was mainly astral and called up Odin, using the screen as a huge black mirror. It didn't take long at all and the black mirror effect was great. I agree that an awareness of grounding before, during and after the excercise is important and suggest that interested people might like to try for the full body effect.
As an aside, I was told a few times of a childhood game involving a dark bathroom, candle, mirror and spinning around 13 times called 'Scary Mary', the object being, not to love the image, but to be scared silly!
I love the idea of using the mirror to connect with the Divine Beloved...hmm maybe a dark monitor screen will work well.
