Just a word or two on suffering.
The ancient Greeks valued suffering very highly. If you read the opening
chapter of Homer's Oddesey you will find Athena and Zeus arguing over the
fate of Oddyseus. Athena points out that Oddyseus has been in torment ever
since the Trojan War ended some ten years earlier. He suffered terribly,
lost all his ships and men to monsters, cannibals and weather. He was all
alone on the island of the nymph Calypso surrounded by beautiful women and he
was still miserable because he missed Penelope, his wife whom he loved very
much. Calypso offers to make him immortal and allow him to live with her in
a tropical paradise for all time. Oddyseus turns down her offer and at that
point Zeus, the King Of All The Gods, calls him the
"Wisest man in the world".
Overcoming suffering leaves you with no doubt in your mind of who you are and
what you are capable of.
