This is what I've come to understand Shaktipat as.
Shaktipat, Grace of the Guru, Guru Initiation;
When one becomes awakened to a certain point with yogic practices, the
kundalini which is aroused acts as a flame. He who is awakened possesses the
ability to 'ignite' others whos energies are dormant.

So bluntly- he raises your Kundalini for you without any effort on your
part. Some one who's recieved shaktipat supposedly has the ability to awaken
others. Thats assuming the initial shaktipat had raised them to this point.
Shaktipat can be transfered with a touch (commonly), a look, or even a
thought.
The benifit of having shaktipat is that the guru is likely able to detect
blockages in the rising energy and clear them.
You don't need shaktipat to arouse K. In fact many put emphasis on taking
the longer yet safer path of arousing it yourself in which you gain
understanding of the chakras, nadis and energy flow within yourself. Not to
mention the benifits of meditation.

   Please please please, would someone tell me what Shaktipat is. From
reading the previous post I have a suspicion that this could answer
alot of my questions(well, one anyway), if it is what i think it is,
