Subject: [K-list] Calcium supplementation
From: Metamorphosis4
On 2002/05/27 19:41, Metamorphosis4 posted thus to the K-list: In order for calcium to be absorbed, it needs to be balance with magnesium on
a 2/1 basis. Zinc, boron and vitamin D must also be present. Also the
stomach needs to be acid enough to be able to absorb the calcium. Tums is a
poor choice for a calcium supplement as it lowers stomach pH and thus gives
poor absorption.
In regard to mineral balance one must also be aware of dietary stresses that
cause minerals to be pulled from the bones. White sugar and white flour in
particular do not come with their own balance of minerals (white sugar has
none and white flour although enriched with certain vitamins does not contain
the full complement or balance of nutrients found in whole wheat) and thus
minerals must be pulled from the bones to remedy this situation. Sugar cane
from which white sugar comes naturally has a full complement of minerals
which are then stripped away (Evaporate cane juice sold under the trade names
Sucranut and Repenzal still contain the minerals in the cane) Also
caffeine, salt, phosphoric acid (in soda) and too much animal protein raise
the pH of the blood and must be buffered by the bodies buffering system --
the minerals in the bones.
Their are many foods with calcium that in their natural state also contain
magnesium in their proper proportion. Chief among them are dark green leafy
vegetables- bok choy, romaine, spinach, kale, broccoli, etc. Also oranges
naturally contain calcium and magnesium and in my professional opinion added
calcium in oj is a minus because there is no magnesium to balance it out.
Other things that contain high amounts of calcium (and mg) are figs, almonds,
maple syrup. blackstrap molasses, tofu sea vegetation, beans and legumes.
Most whole food will have at least a small amount and all of these amounts
add up. Note it is the dairy industry that has us convinced that calcium is
a problem in our diets and that it is necessary to drink milk to correct
this. In reality while milk is high in calcium its absorption rate is low
because of the low mg , high protein and high sodium.
If you are into taking supplements look for one with a 2/1 balance of calcium
to magnesium that also contains zinc, boron and vitamin D (but note Vit D is
usually from animal sources).
The only supplement I currently use is Body Balance by Life Force Intl. It
is a whole food supplement made from aloe vera juice, sea vegetation, cherry
juice and a touch of raw honey. It contains every nutrient known to man
including all of the macro and trace minerals. And because the nutrients are
coming from whole foods and not a chemist laboratory they are in the natural
cis form and can easily be used by the body. Life Force also makes a well
balanced calcium supplement, however it is not vegan so I do not use it. If
you would like more info about these supplements please email me privately.
