That is a very good question. Why should we indeed? It's a lot of trouble
to spend all this time researching psycho-spiritual stuff. Wouldn't that
time be better spent collecting worldly goods and making lots of money?
These are questions that each of us must answer individually. There is not
one "Pat" answer for everyone. Each path is different because everyone's
karma is different. I can only answer for me and you can only answer for
you. But I am willing to share my answer for myself with you.
I study these things, trying my best to understand them because I no longer
wish to be trapped in the world of life and death. I want to clear my karma
and move on to bigger and better things. If I can clear my own karma, then I
can truly help others clear thiers. I want to "Pull the beam from my own
eye" so I can truly see how to help my brothers and sisters. Money, fancy
houses, luxury cars, those are all fine and dandy, they just hold no more
interest for me. I would live a simple life. If I could escape the cold and
the rain and not be hungry, what more could I ask. Everything else is just
distraction--an ego crying out to other egos, deluding themselves into
thinking this illusion of physical existence is all there is because they
rely only on the five senses. I have to follow the wisdom of my heart
because I have seen this world as illusion and I no longer wish to be
deluded.
I cannot say to you that you should follow this path also. But this advice I
would give: Listen to your own heart when you are at peace. Follow the path
it shows you. This is your greatest calling. No one else can tell you what
it is. Some people are required by thier inner being to follow a spiritual
path, others are not. And who really is to say that one path is more
spiritual than another. All follow the will of the divine willingly or
unwillingly, aware or unaware. There is no other choice. The choice we do
have is how aware we are of the process. How much we aid in our own
evolution or how much we thwart it. How much we share joy with one another
or how much we tout our own egos to our brother's detriment.
If my brother starves, how can I be filled. If he thirsts, an ocean cannot
moisten my lips. If he suffers an injustice, all of life's joys are in vain.
It's not a matter really of studying spiritual writings or having an
activated kundalini, or being a member of a group of people who all believe a
certain way. The real question is "How aware are you?"
If we are not here to help one another, what is the point. But it is not
possible to give anything that you do not posses. If you want peace and joy,
develop it first in yourself, then you can share it with others. After that,
we can evolve as a race and move past all this petty physical stuff.
These are my own views. You, and everyone else also, are of course welcome
to your own. This is my answer to your question. Perhaps others will have
ones that are clearer and easier and more universal. This is my path.
