I'm not sure Kristena. I have only knowledge of the Hare Krishna
mantra and so can only speak from that perspective. I know that I
used it with a great deal of scepticism hanging over my actions but
was blessed not long into the repititions( a couple of weeks) before
I was introduced to Krishna. This was the moment of my awakening,
when I realised that anything was possible and I've not l;ooked back
since, though I don't often chant anymore.
I was supposedly( according to Krishna consciousness tradition)
doing it incorrectly as I was doing it on my own AND in the silence
of my head. The first time i noticed the effects I'd been chanting in
my head for about three hours(... You may wonder where such
dedication comes from...I was in prison and pretty bored.) so I
suppose I was pretty deep in a trance. I don't think about Krishna
much though, I think I did right at the beginning.
Something intresting is the fact that here in the UK, where the
Krishna movement is picking up steam, they've decided to have a new
chant which goes..."Gouranga, be happy!" I asked a relevant bloke in
the street about why this sacred word should be used instead of the
mantra( Strictly speaking, Krishna's believe that there is no
difference between the godhead 'Krishna' and the words used in his
mantra) and he said that a lot of people who'd been using the hare
krishna had been eperiencing some bad effects due to them not
preparing themselves correctly and offering correct devotional
service. I jumped on this as I'd been having some problems with what
I'd been going through, and he said that what I described had nothing
whatsoever to do with the mantra, though I new that that was the only
technique or knowledge that I had.
I have a lot of questions about this still, and maybe I'm not
prepared to offer the service that Krishna needs for me to get
anything good back from it. What I do know, from my experiences of it
and, later on, from my readings, is that the Hare Krishna mantra is a
very powerful entity that can have a tremendous affectation on one's
soul.
I think one just needs a lot of love, then there is nothing to be
afraid of.
