On 2002/05/20 15:30, Laura posted thus to the K-list: Thank you for your response Joe, but I am still struggling with this one. You see, I recoil at the thought of female genital mutilation. To me it seems highly immoral due to the reasons you mentioned in your post. Where I am having difficulty is with my own judgement of the act. I saw a documentary that followed the ritual mutilation of a young 14 year old girl in an African tribe. She was afraid of the procedure and a part of her didn't want to do it. But the beliefs of the entire tribe were at stake. This act was not considered an abusive act. It was done within a context that made it a crucial rite of passage into womanhood, not unlike the vision quest of the native american warrior. So, was it moral or immoral? I guess my question is, how do we determine what is moral and what is immoral? In a situation such as mass murder, the answer seems very clear and yet, is not war mass murder? Is war moral or immoral? I would appreciate feedback.
Thanks, Laura
