Subject: Re: [K-list] Singing Bowls of Tibet

I have a small collection of Tibetan singing bowls, and they are
lovely. Good meditation tools, both for the effects of the sound, and in
the playing. You have to be very focused and in tune with the bowl or you
get clanging sounds from the striker bouncing off the edge when it vibrates.

They are great, they make an Om. Your whole body gets attuned to the
vibration, and you will continue to hear it for a while after you stop
playing, because your ear bones continue to vibrate. Great meditation.

Ancient alchemical Tibetan technology, an amalgam of 7 metals including
copper, silver and gold. There are two kinds, the traditional hammered ones
and newer ones that are spun on a lathe... all made in Tibet.

The spun ones are easier to play. Mine are all pretty small, the
largest is about 8" in diameter but I have both spun and hammered ones. I
bring them to pagan events and play with the drummers, and sometimes use
them in sessions.

The crystal bowls are lovely too, and much easier to play, you just
stroke them once and they sing for a minute... but they are huge and
expensive. About $700 each. Easier to find tho, there are websites that
sell them.

The first time I heard a singing bowl was at the harmonic convergence
in the early 80's... at first I did not know what to make of it, I had
expected something like Mike Oldfields Tubular bells... but I relaxed and
went with it, and it sparked a partial re-awakening of my K. after several
years of "spiritual winter".

I did a google search just now for tibetan singing bowls and came up
with dozens of sites selling the metal and crystal ones. Personally, I
would not suggest getting one off the web. Better to find a store that
sells them so you can try playing them and choose the sound vibration that
suits you best. Often it will take a few minutes practice to get a sound...
you and the bowl have to get to know each other!

 Blessings...
