traditional Vedic take on this topic.
The three energy centers sound like you're trying to merge Taoism and
Vedanta (or other Indian system). Save yourself some time, don't bother.
They have different views of things and while pieces of them can be overlaid
reasonably well, many don't overlay at all. I believe them to both be
essentially correct. They are just disjoint and were developed with somewhat
different goals in mind. I'd say the differences indicate the limitation of
man understanding the creation of God more than anything else.
Thee three Taoist defined energy centers are also called the three minds by
some, because the energy has an intelligence of its own. They are located at
or near the third eye (upper), the heart (middle), and third chakra (lower).
As to the number of chakras question.... Traditionally only 7 are talked
about but each of us has 21 MAJOR and lots and lots of minor chakras (minor
ones would include those in the hands for example that can be activated and
used for healing). There are 7 that are discussed extensively in the
literature, which is what most people think of.
Those 7 are the work for this lifetime. To get there you had to work on 7
that are below what we call 1st chakra. They are located from the ground up
to 1st chakra. The 7th of those essentially overlaying what we call the
first chakra at the base of our spine. It is those chakras that puppy and
kitty are working on, along with all other creatures. Once they get to the
7th in that set of the first 7 they get born as humans and get to work on
the next 7 with the rest of us.
Skipping most of the stuff about the center 7 since everyone has heard lots
about them already we get to the 7th of the center 7. Reaching Bindhu point
there is defined as enlightenment. At that point you shift into the root or
1st of the 3rd 7. These are chakras that are mostly worked on in the
astral, it takes lifetimes to get to Bindhu so there isn't a lot of time to
work on them while in the body. Most work there is done as an astral being
in most cases.
But very advanced human beings can work on them and they bring great gifts
if they are achieved. I have met one person who was in his physical body who
was also as far as the 3rd one of that set.
A few years ago Hinduism Today published an edition with a drawing of a sadu
with all 21 chakras shown. It has been at least 3 years maybe as many as 5
or even more since that edition. The discussion wasn't a lot but it was a
good basic outline. If your library has back issues of it it would be worth
looking through them if you have an interest in this topic.
Namaste,
Joe
