I received my first Reiki treatment or initiation "by accident". I was reading about Reiki about 5 or 6 years ago on the net. The particular site I was reading discussed what each of the symbols meant but did not show the symbols. I heard a voice say to me, "seeing the symbols are not necessary for they are just a visual representation of the energy." I then received such a huge influx of energy into me that I became so dizzy and I had to hold on to the arm rests of the chair or I would have fallen out of it.
I would also advise that since Reiki energy and Kundalini energy are two separate kinds of energy I would be aware of who gives me Reiki treatments. First of all, Reiki can help or hinder the process. It depends on the individual and the person giving the attunement.
Secondly, I have hurt other healers who have tried to give me treatments because my k field is so strong. One, who was channeling a guide, looked like she had been slapped up the side of the head hard and then she developed a migraine. Those who had been watching the interaction said they saw a huge flash of light as she removed something from me. (which I found later was NOT suppose to have been removed). I think it is instructive here to see that her guide had no insight that this might happen to her. Guides don't know everything even though people may think they do.
I think it is important to choose a wise and GROUNDED healer to work with you. You could hurt them as much as they could hurt you. I don't think people realize there is this potential of the strength of their kundalini field may hurt the healer if the healer is not experienced.
