following title and workshop description:
Spiritual Emergenc-y: The Light Hidden Within the Shadows of Emotional
Crisis?
Many symptoms of traditional acute mental health crisis mirror those of
spiritual emergence and emergency. People experiencing spiritual emergency
have needs that can go hand-in-hand with traditional medical and mental
health crisis assessment, intervention and treatment but also need another
level of assessment, intervention and care that is typically unavailable
within our traditional mental health and medical systems.
What are the symptoms of spiritual emergency? How can a crisis professional
best assess, intervene, and support the individual experiencing what appears
to be an acute emotional crisis while at the same time respecting and
supporting the possibility of spiritual emergenc-y?
This workshop-discussion will:
1. address the history of spiritual emergence and emergency,
2. identify the bio-psycho-social-cultural underpinnings that support and
assist in the
assessment and differentiation of spiritual emergency and mental health
emergency,
3. Provide crisis intervention techniques and tools for people in spiritual
crisis as well as resources for additional information, intervention and
treatment.

Jennifer--
Admirable goal...I am wondering if you can connect the idea of spirituality
with cultural difference--you know, like the book "The Spirit Catches You
and You Fall Down" which is about how the Hmong people (an Asian culture)
believe that medical illness must be cured by spiritual means, and how these
means can sometimes interfere with medical interventions. It's a book whose
message is, if you want people to be compliant with doctors'
recommendations, you need to be able to understand and incorporate their
spiritual/cultural beliefs into your treatment plan. This is not so much a
catchy title as a way to "sell" the idea of spirituality's importance and
relevance to the Establishment.
Let's see. Catchy titles:
"Mental illness and Divinity--Touched in the head or touched by God?"
"Psychology and Pspirit"
"Evolutionary crisis: developmental milestones and spirituality"
"How many MHCs can sit on the head of a pin? Spiritual dimensions of mental
health"
Just a few ideas...
Good luck!
Love,
Elizabeth
