From: Jennifer
On 2002/01/11 08:41, Jennifer posted thus to the K-list: Thank you to those of you who responded to my request for potential workshop
titles for the presentation proposal I am attempting to put together for a
crisis intervention conference. I'm going to give some thought to what
you've all suggested and probably come up with a hybrid.
I like the idea of linking the need for medical personnel to be
understanding, respectful and integrative with their approach to patients in
need of crisis intervention and follow-up services. The conference attracts
mental health crisis intervention personnel who would be considered both
'first and second responders' to the person in crisis and as such, the
initial assessment of the patient's condition both on their observation as
well as the content and context of what the person in crisis is reporting
are critical to the overall assessment and treatment recommendations given
to the individual as well as the 'treatment' resource(s) to which the person
is directly or indirectly linked.
My presentation goal is simply to offer information and curiosities that
might raise the level of awareness of the existence of spiritual emergencies
and to open doors of possibility in the context of crisis assessment,
intervention and treatment.
Just to give you a very small view of one part of myself ... I am a licensed
therapist with 10 years of past crisis intervention experience .. I left the
field of traditional mental health 4 years ago when I became totally burned
out with the politics of mental health and completely disappointed and
disillusioned with the professionals with whom I worked and interacted
within local, regional, state and federal systems.
Today, I while I have continue to have no interest in returning to what I
was doing prior to four years ago, I do recognize that I have a
responsibility to myself and community to at least offer doorways of
possibility to the traditional professional mental health community by
providing information, resources and referrals that might lead to expanded
and raised awarenesses.
I would be interested in collaborating on the writing of a consumer-friendly
article on the subject of spiritual awakenings, spiritual emergencies, and
traditional medical and mental health care intervention versus the
integration of traditional and nontraditional assessment and intervention.
If interested, please contact me privately.

Jennifer--
Admirable goal...I am wondering if you can connect the idea of spirituality
with cultural difference--you know, like the book "The Spirit Catches You
and You Fall Down" which is about how the Hmong people (an Asian culture)
believe that medical illness must be cured by spiritual means, and how these
means can sometimes interfere with medical interventions. It's a book whose
message is, if you want people to be compliant with doctors'
recommendations, you need to be able to understand and incorporate their
spiritual/cultural beliefs into your treatment plan. This is not so much a
catchy title as a way to "sell" the idea of spirituality's importance and
relevance to the Establishment.
Let's see. Catchy titles:
"Mental illness and Divinity--Touched in the head or touched by God?"
"Psychology and Pspirit"
"Evolutionary crisis: developmental milestones and spirituality"
"How many MHCs can sit on the head of a pin? Spiritual dimensions of mental
health"
Just a few ideas...
Good luck!
Love,
Elizabeth
