OVERVIEW:
ACI Online Course V, How Karma Works, will start Friday January 25 2002.
This is arranged by ACIWest study and meditation group,
http://www.tsongkhapa.org/aciwest (spiritual guide Geshe Michael Roach),
and is classified as an official ACI course.
TOPIC:
All Buddhist practices are based upon the laws of karma, and so it is
crucial to understand thoroughly how karma works to succeed in any and
every Buddhist path. This Course is based upon the Treasure House of
Higher Knowledge (Abhidharma Kosha) by Master Vasubandhu (350 AD), along
with its
commentary by the First Dalai Lama. Topics include: an Abhidharma
overview; the definition and nature of karma; good, bad and neutral
karma; karma of body, speech, and mind; the definition of virtue and
non-virtue; black and white deeds; projecting and finishing karma;
karmic consequences; how karma is carried; how emptiness allows karma to
function; karmic paths; the five immediate misdeeds; how to make a
karmic result powerful; and the purification of karma.
COST:
The cost is totally free including all the material provided. However,
the requirement is to attend nine out of ten sessions as well as do the
needed homeworks, meditations and quizzes, as well as the final exam.
Failing to send in homeworks and quizzes on a regular basis means that
the participant is
no longer taking part in the online course.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This online course is arranged for those who don't have close access to
an authentic lineage and buddhist teachers teaching this topic. If
there's an option to take these classes directly from a qualified
teacher, such as an ACI instructor in New York, Arizona, California, and
so forth, then this should be done.
If you wish, you could also do this course as a Tibetan track for
learning key words and definitions in case you want to read Tibetan
texts about this topic.
Note that you could attend this course without taking any of the earlier
ACI courses (this is true of all the ACI courses).
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
* An Internet connection for email and web browsing
* Adobe Acrobat (4.0 or better)
* MP3 player, winamp or something similar (most computers that are less
than 3 years old have something installed).
We will assist with the installation and tech support to get all this in
place. When you join the mailing list you will get instructions prior to
the start of the course.
