Subject: [K-list] Hot flashes and damn beavers

Hello Hillary ..

An eager family of beavers builds a dam of branches and leaves in a natural
watercourse. Some of the water will generally, eventually find a way either
around, over or through the dam. Sometimes, new water courses and new
tributaries are established.

This was fine for a while, the rain fell normally the streams continue to
flow ..
but some of the once fertile areas become dry due to the dam - other areas
adapted to their new flow of water .. the dam continues to collect sludge and
silt, building up over time. Some of the down stream farmers lay irrigation
pipes
to try and keep their fields from drying out too much .. but generally,
life in
the little valley and the surrounding land adapts, and progresses. But,
further
down stream there is less and less water and some of the land becomes drier
and drier.. the farmers there didn't know that some eager beavers had decided
to build a dam higher up in the hills .. they just made do with less and less
water and the once fertile flats became less and less productive .. but some
of the farmers adapted to new ways of working .. different crops were grown ..

But one day, there is a huge thunderstorm in the hills and a great volume of
water comes rushing down the watercourse, sweeping the dam with all of its
built up silt out of the way. Some of the flood water finds its way down
the more
recently eroded water courses, but most of it finds its way in a rush down the
original water course, carrying with it, the structure of the dam with all
of the
sludge and silt built up over time - along with the irrigation scheme that
the farmers close to the dam had put in to try and survive.

The flood passes - the ferocity of the water as the dam burst caused some
erosion damage to the surrounding landscape - but eventually, the land was
restored to the way it was before the water course was blocked - a gentle
flow of water finding its way down stream to again provide life for a land
that
had become parched.

But, the overall balance of life would never be quite the same as it was,
before the beavers .. for quite a few seasons to come ...  == Christopher Wynter
