You could look at it this way. If you hold a grudge towards another
(whether person or thing or yourself), then that 'thing' has some
control over you. You are basing your freedom and happiness on the
presence or strength of that thing in you life. If you forgive that
thing then you are allowing yourself more freedom. Freedom to me equals
greater awareness + potential and ability to act in any situation.

Forgivenss is unnatural because it not what we are taught as we grow up
in the world (at least for most people). Once we learn the benefit of
forgiveness you may find a new zest for life and appreciation and
compassion towards others.
