Susan and Sean, good points, very compelling posts. Thanks.
Leslee,
A quick summary of where I am coming from:
In my case, the "strangeness" began shortly after I began really
depending on yoga and bodywork to bring me back from car-accident
injuries. In fact, the first big incident occurred on a bodyworker's
table. It was terribly frightening... for the therapist as well as
me. I spent hours with him on the phone later in the day trying
to "calm down"... to very little avail. (Argh! I still get compressed
thinking about it.) Neither of us had a clue. :)
What I found was that from that point forward, yoga was fuel, though
not necessarily kerosene. I was doing several different kinds of yoga
and found that some "styles" would rev me up (kundalini, some of the
more dynamic hatha, iyengar, ashtanga.. not necessarily a bad thing,
if you are aware of what you're doing) and others would "relax" me
(gentle, restorative and flow hatha, chi kung, tai chi). I found that
my mental state during the practice had a lot to do with what the
energy was doing and would do for hours/days afterwards. Like you,
the yoga practice was a joy.
I had been doing yoga for years prior to the accident... and all that
yogamind stuff was interesting, but not really applicable. (You may
know what I mean...) I found that after the "strangeness" began,
developing some of the "mental" disciplines that "accompany" yoga was
a great boon in developing a relationship with the trilling energies,
highly unusual occurrences, and "resultant" (and sometimes
frightening) shifts in "worldview".
The main thing with the yoga is to begin to develop an awareness of
how it relates to what your energy is doing. Be conscious of how you
use it. Granted, it is nice to have someone who understands spiritual
emergence and the craziness of awakening to guide you, but if you can
retain a sense of balance, it is certainly safe and ok to go it on
your own in the meantime. :)
In my case, it seems that yoga and the shifts I went through
supported the deepening of the other... an opportunity to get deeper
into my body while expanding outwards. May it be so for you, as it
serves you, as well.
warmly,
Nina
