Subject: [K-list] DSM5
From: Cleocatras
On 2001/05/09 00:00, Cleocatras posted thus to the K-list: Dear Rachel,
You are exactly right about the idea of throwing out the DSM5. You have to
understand the spirit in which it was intended to be written. The book was
designed for mental health healing. In order to fix depression, you have to
define it. The definitions of all the so-called disorders are all in there...
My point was not to give it all power that you thought I was giving it. My
point was to use it as a guide. Unless you know the language of the
establishment it is hard to stay free of them. You have to speak their
language, psycho-babble that it is...
To give an example, all the PhD's thought I was Bi-Polar Manic-Depressant,
all the while I did not share with them that I had a severe thyroid
condition, and went from severe hypER thyroid to severe hypO thyroid all
within 30 days.
These same folks were also ready to arrest me on the grounds of neglect for
not medicating my son for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, when in fact it is
probably the more rare form of Autism, called Asperger's Disorder and no
medications apply, and instead some intense socialization and clinical
behavioralist guided therapeutic play...
The manual is probably still your friend, but the people who do not read it
carefully enough are not. My personal experience is that if those Doctors
know you read it carefully, then they might start being more careful about
their diagnoses (and consequently, medications) And save you some grief
later...
I can say that anyone that has use of the english language and spelling like
you do cannot be at all what they have said about you. But dont let that damn
psych file follow you around. You cant even display a normal range of
responses without those kind of people making something of it if they have a
file. I am speaking from my own experiences with my son and my foster kids.
If you cant argue a good case in their own language, that file will dictate
what happens next.
I almost got hauled in myself for Munchhouser's Syndrome only because I knew
more about my son's environment and the causal effects of OCD than they
thought they knew about his condition. Because professionals know very little
about Asperger's, their ignorance could only conclude that the mother was
"doing" something to the child... Out of ten psychologists who were
recommended, I ask each one if they could differentiate Obessive Compulsive
Disorder from the ritualistic behaviors of Asperger's Disorder and not one of
the ten said they were experienced enough to do this... I found only three
psychologists, neurologists or others in the entire state of Florida who felt
they could do this. This documentation of professional ignorance saved me
from being committed for an unnecessary evaluation.
All I was saying to you is that knowing the manual can be your armour. Mental
health people have too much power, and can take away more of your human
rights than what happens to you if you get arrested for a capital crime.
Because psychology is a relative and not an exact science, ambiguity is
accepted unless you have done your homework. If you can argue a good case in
their language (ie from the DSM5) things will stop happening to you.
