It is necessary to grow an ego as a child, to learn socialization,
civilization and toilet training.. to be an individual living in a society.

    The North American natives used the rite of adulthood to kill off the
useful child ego, once it had outgrown its purpose. After the ritual, the
initiate was sent off into the woods by themselves for 3 days to
visionquest, without eating or sleeping till they hallucinated a vision
that gave them their new name.. sense of self. Thus, "All my relations"..
they did not see them selves as separate from the world they lived in..
they were enlightened.
