Dear Anne Elizabeth,
I too have felt these "spirits," but I "translate" them positively. You
might want to check into the following poll we did on entities:

I feel that these experiences are so incredibly compelling that it is almost
impossible to "undo" our initial reaction to them. What we have "decided"
they are, becomes "truth" personified. Having experienced the overwhelming
joy/bliss of these energies, I am all the more aware of their power to
occasionally *produce* conclusions that they are "evil."
Lee Sannella in *kundalini Experience* says something interesting in this
regard, "The signs and symptoms usually described, such as shifts in emoting
and thinking as well as the experience of visions and the hearing of voices,
appear to be largely determined by personal factors (the "set") and external
circumstances (the "setting").
The Fact that the "setting" in this case is your being surrounded by
neighbors doing "black" magic is interesting :)) : "I was living alone in
the inner city and my lovely neighbors did rituals, voodo, black magic" You
were already alone and afraid and vulnerable, I presume.
It is how we "translate" these experiences--how we proceed to act on what we
"think" they are telling us, that make the results good or evil or perceived
to be good or evil.
As most list members know, ultimately, I do not believe evil personified
exists--only evil deeds by men who "know not what they do."
And I think we must be made aware that these energies are a positive force
basically, but that our *interpretation* of them can make them evil. Common
sense must prevail.
The same applies to the "voices" we and historical figures have heard--among
them Jim Jones, Joan of Arc, Moses, (was it Jacob who nearly slaughter his
son?), Rasputin, etc. etc.--in other words those overwhelmed by these "god is
speaking to me" energies, have the capability to "translate" these energies
in ways that affect society both positively and negatively, depending on the
experiencer's background. (And the outcome can be seen as positive or
negative depending on how history sees it in hindsight). Unfortunately, one
of the "triggers" to these energies is abuse in childhood (Rasputin is a case
in point here). Obviously this can produce unfortunate results. The
"setting" again. :))
What is absolutely true is the charismatic power these energies in still in
the individual, and the compelling nature of how we perceive them.
Most of us, alas, simply are not enlightened enough to translate these
energies properly.
