Hi Tom!

I was on holiday for the new year...

When I came back, I noticed your comments on my comments....

| Sorry Ma An-Guo
| I've read the Heil Hitler thread and realize I was unfair to you.

don't be sorry... We all judge and we all judge wrongly... we (but the most
enlightened ones among us) do that all the time...

Thank you to Mystress for taking the time to correct the misunderstanding...
You are very kind!

As she pointed out, I have lived in Poland, but also in Germany and in
England (Birmingham) and now in the Republic of China. It is funny to notice
the difference of attitude towards the war and the memories attached to it.

| >Shen said she didn't think the ad campaign, which began this month, would
| offend Taiwanese consumers, who "are not that sensitive about Hitler" and
| wouldn't think about how he oversaw the deaths of millions of Jews and
| others during World War II.

The above is true... You were just unlucky that you guessed wrong... I am
not an average Taiwanese consumer.

Artifacts that would be banned in Europe, especially in Germany, are found
here. Most people ride a scooter and I have seen several times riders
wearing a German army WW2 helmet, with the swatiska printed on it. I have
seen T-shirts sold in fashionable stores with the nazi flag printed on the
chest...

I think the people are mostly confused. Many are Buddhist but most do not
understand the difference between the Buddhist swatiska and the nazi flag.
Is there difference, really?

When I was in Britain, I purchased vegetarian food in a local Chinese
supermarket. As customary, the packaging was imprinted with the swatiska,
the Buddhist symbol. A British friend who came for dinner one evening saw it
and gave me a quizzical look, wondering whether I was some kind of
neo-nazi... Same confusion but the other way around...

There was a Café in Taipei with a "concentration camp theme". Patrons were
locked in their "cell" during dinner and waiters were disguised as
prisoners. On the walls were numerous pictures of the nazi concentration
camps... The German representative office (there are no embassy here,
because the country officially 'doesn't exist', so we have 'representative
office' instead) complained to the local government... the Café is now
closed... the owner says sorry... he just wanted to be fashionable, trendy,
have an edge on the competition. He never thought this was a sensitive issue
for anybody...

| It would
| be a disaster for peace and also for the diversity of Chinese culture if
| the PRC were to invade.

That's a real threat we learn to live with... just like the earthquakes...
You seem to know more than the average westerners about this...

| I don't see them trying because of the WTO
| business.

The situation is even more complex than that. some fear that the PRC WTO
entry will destabilize the government... whose only chance of survival would
be by creating an open conflict with Taiwan so as to divert the attention
away from the inner conflict...

I keep hearing about predictions by think tanks of when the war will
actually start... GW Bush may not be helping things either... though his
election was mostly welcome in Asia...

| It's an old trick to try and unite a disaffected population by
| giving them a foreign military adventure to think about. A change of
| government is long overdue.
| Tom

We've had a change of government on our side of the straight last year. I am
very happy about it. There was a lot of hope... At last a new government,
the first passation of power from one party to another one... in peace... A
new democracy. The new president and his party campaigned to end the
corruption, promote environmental protection, sustainable development,
promote human rights, stop the construction of the 4th nuclear power
plant... But his policies have been blocked by the new opposition party who
still holds the majority in the legislative chamber. I seem to be the only
one left who still has some hopes left nine months later...

Hopes or threats?

What do we focus on?

Thank you, Tom,

love,

Augustin.
