Dear Amy
 you are doing ok even if it seems your Dad isent.
I am a sober Alcholic and went through the suicidal depression even thinking
of taking my twin daughters with me. That was 25 years ago and now I am a
grandfather. such joy.
One of the best pieces of advice I was given in AA was when faced with a
difficult situation was "make a positive decision to do nothing."
The AA prayer applies to all.
God give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change The courage to
change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Through The 12 step program of AA I came to realise that all I could expect
to change was me.

Recently a friend said Do you think God dosent know what you are going to
do?
So this being the case free will is very limited in my humble opinion.
If you want to substitute higher self for God its the same essence.

The situation that your Dad is in is between God and himself even though he
dosent believe.

Another friend asked me
Do you believe God looks after you?
I had to agree there is a lot of evidence of this in my life.
The next statement was. Well do you not believe God can look after your
friend if you ask Him to?
So in AA parlance offer it to God and then let go.
Very difficult when its a close relative.
