I used to subscribe to this perspective once, too.

However, the deeper I have gone into the nature of my own
unconscious, and the deeper I have gone with my groups into this

(and I have had the opportunity of working with
  up to 5 generations of the one family)

the more compelling is the evidence

that we do, consciously or unconsciously
   "create our own reality"

and the upshot of this is that the mind thinks it has
free will .. but in reality, its a bit like feeding programs
into a computer .. and finding out after the hard drive
crashes that there were software conflicts.

the only conclusion I can arrive at is that, unless the
complexities of the genetic program are understood,
no amount of "beliefs" will ever give us free will.

sooner or later the crash comes .. and, from experience,
on one's deathbed .. in those last few minutes .. the light
is turned on .. and one realises the missed opportunities ..

  its the regrets over what we have not done
   that bring us back ..

In the end, the idea that we have a choice about what "programs"
we can install .. without understanding the "operating system"
is the "big truck" that is going to run over us ...
