Ashok --

This is wonderful! I'm a Saraswati-bhakta, and She often gets short
shrift in the Tantrik texts. I was told, for example (after I had chosen
Her as my patron deity), that Saraswati "cannot grant moksha (release
from the wheel of samsara) -- though She can make you eloquent enough to
convince Shiva or Vishnu to grant release." (!!!)

I look forward to more excerpts from the Panchastavi (which means
"Five-fold... something [?]")

See below for more comments from me...

I have a <stotram> (have to dig it out of my library) that lists these
and other <bija> (single syllable mantras) for invoking Saraswati.

The Sanskrit letter for "Aing" does indeed resemble an opening sprout of
maidenhair fern -- except that it's upside down!

Satyatapas Rishi was born with a curse -- although a Brahmin, he was
illiterate and an embarassment to his family (today we would say he was
dyslexic, or had attention deficit disorder!). He moved to a hut in the
forest, and cared for a wild boar wounded by a hunter. Now, Vedic pigs
do not say "oink." They say "aing" (which sounds similar). The dyslexic
youth imitated the boar, repeating "AING" (which is Saraswati's seed
syllable). After perhaps 1008 repetitions, the Goddess appeared to him
and made him a scholar and a great <kavi> (a word which means both "poet"
and "seer").

This particular Panchastavi verse also explains the Saraswati Gayatri (a
Gayatri is a 24 syllable invocation). It goes:

vagishvaryai cha vidmahe
kamarajaya dhimahi
tanno devi prachodayat

(we envision the Lady of Speech/
we meditate upon Kamaraja/
may the Goddess inspire us.)

"Kamaraja" can be translated as "king of all desires," or "King Kama"
(the God of Lust). But this Panchastavi says it means the bija mantra,
KLING, which is also sacred to Saraswati.

SAUH is that rarity, a seed syllable that doesn't end with a nasalization
(-m, or -ng). It should be said with a final aspiration (-h), bringing
an abrupt stop, instead of vibrating into space.

Saraswati's color is usually white, but here she is invoked as red, to
arouse desire.
