Count me in!
I'll do my best to take part to the chat party that Wim mentioned,
otherwise, I am with you all in spirit.
To your "Christmas/Hunuka/Kwanza/Yule/Solstice/Whatever Feast and Frolic
Fest" list, you can add the celebration of the birthday of the Chinese
Nationalist leader Sun Yat-Sen! (Hmmm, actually better not ;-) )
The 25th of December is a holiday here, in the Republic of China, not
because of Christmas, but because it is the birthday of the founding
father...
We do have Christmas celebrations but it only includes the commercial
aspects and the festive orgy, without any reference to family reunion nor
religious significance.
I asked dozens of students to give me a list of words associated with
Christmas:
Christmas cards,
Christmas Tree,
Santa Claus,
Christmas presents...
Christmas carols...
They told me everything, but...
...anything having to do with Christ...
Only one,
one who seemed to have more understanding of this western tradition,
told me proudly that Christmas had something to do with Jesus,
...
probably something related to the day when He was crucified.... !
Anyway, Jesus was born in summer and Christmas originally was a pagan
festival.
It high jacked by Catholics who have now in turn be stolen by commercial
greed...
It has been years that I haven't celebrated Christmas,
because of the commercial and dysfonctioning family reunion aspects of it...
But your Christmas party appeals to me.
You mentioned all the right ingredients to make it a success.
(Wim, can I substitute Chocolate with a local specialty? The Stinky Tofu?
(one do actually smell a stinky tofu merchant from 200 yards downwind...
worse than my shoes and last month's socks! Don't worry, my computer doesn't
have a smell-card.)
Happy munching to all,
Augustin.
