Greetings to all,
I must admit to not being a "spiritual" convert to yoga but rather a
person converted by an (accidental) experience while jogging.
About 15 years ago I jogged an hour a day five days a week whenever the
weather permitted it.
Chance had it that the persons I happened to meet who were interested in
yoga were just not convincing for me. I just stuck to a textbook of
physiology if I wanted to know anything about breathing, but avidly read
books on Indian religions.
After developing "adult onset asthma" I became intensively interested in
breathing exercises to save my life and avoid medication. This was very
successful and I am now the "owner" of a list on asthma breath therapy.
However, it did seem that I had developed a certain lung deficiency and
in order to "grow more lung" or at any rate stop the rot and loss of
lung activity, I started jogging with strict nasal breathing and - most
important - maximizing the number of steps per breath: a sort of breath
retention.
On a number of occasions I found to my absolute astonishment that by
"concentrating energy" on my lower abdomen or perhaps the "tanden" of
the Japanese, I got a stupendously powerful invigorating effect lasting
about 24 hours. I felt omnipotent and serene but also at times had an
extreme sexual drive - just as if a safety valve had been quickly and
inadvertently sealed off.
I do not think that this effect had anything to do with endorphins or
the like but rather with a sort of tuning up of my respiration system to
make more oxygen available throughout the body. I should add that the
general long lasting effect on my breathing seemed excellent - just
quiet and inconspicuous when setting at rest, but with plenty of power
in reserve.
Has anybody else had this sort of experience with breath
retention/exertion, which I stumbled upon? Cheers, Richard Friedel.
