There's tantalizing evidence that my mother's family is decended from
Pieter Lastmann, a Dutch Jewish painter who taught Rembrandt. But my
mother's immediate ancestry is from Lithuania, so the family must have
wandered away from the Netherlands...

I was friends with a pretty young Dutch-born woman here in Noo Yawk. She
invited a group of friends to her tiny East Village studio to show us her
new computer software and serve us cocoa. Now, I have psoriasis, a
non-contagious skin disease that forms reddened lesions that flake --
it's like having dandruff all over your body. I was seated on her bed,
it was winter and the air was dry, and I idly scratched my wrist, so a
few flakes fell on her coverlet. My Dutch friend screamed, "Out! Out of
my house!" threw my coat at me and pushed me out the door. I am told
that she immediately stripped off the coverlet, put it in the laundry
bin, laid out a new coverlet, and began frantically vacuuming the room.

My friend Alexei came out to meet me shortly afterwards. He said, "We
all explained to Tanya that you weren't contagious, but you know the
Dutch and their obsessions with cleanliness."

I called to apologize, but she never answered my messages, and mutual
friends told me I was no longer welcome at her house.
