When Ross Perot siphoned off enough Republican votes so that President
Bush lost to Clinton, where was Algore with his ideas about third partys
then. If he is such a fair person, why didnt he insist that Clinton give
the election to Pres. Bush? ;-) I beleave Algore would gladly do away
with the multi party system, and have only one party, that being the

completely different from Nader voters, virtually none of which would have
voted for Bush.
My biggest problem with Nader
was that he ran an intellectually dishonest campaign. His main claim was that
there was no difference between Bush and Gore, which was obviously bullshit.
He also claimed that it wouldn't matter regarding appointments to the Supreme
Court, which is a rediculous assertion. ln support of this, Nader cited the
fact that Democratic senators had almost unanimously affirmed the appointment
of Justice Scalia years ago. What Nader knows full well, but didn't say, was
that the standard for voting whether or not to confirm a justice is
completely different from the criteria a President applies in appointing a
justice.
lt's with this kind of disingenous crap that Nader was able
to mislead naive voters looking for a crusader on a white horse. Of course,
it's always easy to appear principled when you're not trying to get elected
and only want 5% of the vote.
What we have here is a genuine
polictical crisis in the making, and l see no easy answers. lt appears that
Gore not only won the popular vote in the nation but also probably won the
popular vote in Florida, but for the fact that residents of Palm Beach County
were confused by the ballot and mistakenly voted for Buchanan instead of Gore
(leaving aside other possible irregularities). There is no question about
this, as Buchanan himself has admitted that the vote he got in that county
was far beyond what it should have been. Regardless of how Gore feels,
the voters themselves are outraged and are taking action.
This means that as it stands now Bush cannot claim a
legitimate victory, and his presidency would lack credibility and would be
weakened. Both Bush and his supporters should not want the presidency under
these circumstances. Yet it is true that there is no attractive alternative
-- no easy way out of this. Americans don't value their vote and take their
political system for granted. They may learn from this experience.
