Sorry you had to endure that tension and terror, Henry. Too bad parents don't
have to have 5 years of therapy and counseling and yoga before they're allow
to procreate.
Because I'm a poet, I pay close attention to language, and how we use it. So
many of our beliefs about the "way things are" are merely linguistic
constructions. For example, before the Civil Rights movement of the sixties,
white people referred to People of Color as non-whites. They described them
negatively in relation to themselves, making "whites" the center of the
universe, the God point of view so to speak, so they didn't really care about
different cultures, all they cared about was white and non-white. Jews, of
course, aren't considered white people.
In the sixties, People of Color decided not to let whites define them
(everyone should define themselves), and took on a positive name: People of
Color, instead of the negation of themselves as non-whites.
Now when it comes to the sexes, we have these phrases we use. "Battle of the
Sexes", "Opposite Sexes." Why not "Complementary Sexes"? When you look at
male and female anatomy, they are not opposites, or they wouldn't fit
together so neatly. They are complementary. But with these linguistic
constructions forced into our brains from birth, is it any wonder we grow up
with the genders being wary of each other.
What if we were raised hearing "The Fiesta of the Sexes" instead of "The
Battle of the Sexes?" If we were raised hearing "Complementary Sexes". I
think we would have much different mindsets. As Heiddeger said, "Language is
the house man dwells in."
