Dear Poet,

   In the uproariously funny book, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and
subsequent radio play and TV show) 42 is the answer to the "ultimate
question of life the universe and everything."
   After eons of questing and contemplating, a civilization decided to
stop messing around, get down to business and build a giant computer to
do the job right.

   The machine was built and just as the ultimate question was about to
be asked, two "workin' thinkers" from the Philosopher's Union marched up
to protest.......

The computer stated that such a question would take thousands more
years to answer.

Ages later, the descendants of the machine's builder stood in front
of the monolith and waited for the big answer.
The machines began to rumble, blew out a puff of smoke and bellowed,
"42!"

"42?!... WHAT KIND OF AN ANSWER IS THAT?!?!... We've waited all this
time!!!!...."

The computer answered, "You didn't state the question clearly,"

I can't quote precisely as I don't have the book (I only saw the
show). Wim, anybody, who was the mad jester who wrote it?

The scenario brings to mind the specter of artificial intelligence
and the possibility of a Matrix like future. I suppose I should be
gravely concerned about it, but I'm too busy laughing my life away.
