Time Life Book series on the Universe and then World Religions (when
I was 8...sheesh.) I remember sitting in front of the book case
looking up references in the Encyclopedia Brittanica then start
reading on subjects that lead me to other subjects...surfing the
brittanica :)
Did I mention my mother taught me to read before I was 5?
I loved the Wrinkle in Time books, Pippi Longstocking, Gulliver's
Travels (all of them), The Little Prince, The Velveteen Rabbit, The
Yearling, (my father would read it to me), the Wind in the Willows,
National Geographic (my grandfather had all the issues back to the
very first one and I read them all), ancient history and mythology
books both old world and new (fascinated by the Incas, Mayans, etc.),
Dune, The Lord of the Rings Triology (actually anything by Tolkein),
anything by John MacDonald (mentor of Tolkein) who wrote The Back of
the North Wind ...about Death for children, Robert Heinlein books,
anything and everything of classical science fiction...and classical
fairy tales. When I was 14 I discovered the modern horror
genre...hello Stephen King, Clive Barnes(masterful) and the rest.
I once decided to read my whole public library and I would ride my
bike down to it on Saturdays, when it opened at 10am. I would stay
until it closed at 10 pm, determined to read thru the whole library
by the Dewey Decimal Classification system which meant I started with
Philosophy and then went to World Religions. After the first 30 books
I got tired of it. I should have not read thru all the archived
magazines of Time Life, Newsweek and others first. Too much data
dump. This all before I was 14.
My father used to buy me old books from libraries and I would read 3
to 5 books a day in the summer.
Did I tell you I lived in an extremely abusive home (not with my real
father) so I did anything I could think of to escape from it?
Just a short list,
Susan
