A couple of years ago someone sent a post to this list with a link to a
literary work he'd written about Mumbai and Mumbadevi. When I read it I had
an immediate feeling of recognition with the material. Then I remembered my
childhood "playmate" Mumba. I searched all over the net to find more
information and perhaps a picture, but there's not much information
available and no pictures since photography in the temple is forbidden. The
gist of what I found is below.
I still don't have any conscious memory of Mumba, but I feel a very strong
connection with what I've learned about her. In fact, I have a strong
obsession with India in general. (I've watched all 14 episodes of "The Jewel
in the Crown" at least six 6 times plus read the book!) If anyone on the
list is familiar with Mumbadevi, I would love to hear from you privately.
"The temple was built in honour of goddess Mumba from whose name Mumbai
[formerly Bombay] is derived. The Goddess personifies Mother Earth and is
still worshipped by descendants of Dravidians. The original temple by Koli
fisherman was demolished around 1737, and a new temple was erected at Phansi
Talao. The modern shrine contains an image of Goddess Mumbadevi dressed in a
robe with a silver crown and a nose stud and a golden necklace. To the left
is a figure of Annapurna seated on a peacock. In front of the shrine is a
tiger, the carrier of the Goddess.Tuesday is the chief day of worship."
