Well, I was totally sick of this thread, but Rob's email caught my eye. (Next time I'll have to close my eyes as I go through my email. :-) )
What interested me most was what you wrote about psychopaths, and the one who tried to pass as multiple personality, then gave a rehearsed spontaneous heartfelt speech. These are scary people, because they can look completely emotional and remorseful, but it's only an act. I dated a psychopath once; well, at least once, but this one guy was a clear-cut case of a psychopath, with the criminal history (I found out later) to prove it. Several months later I was in the library looking up a book; it wasn't there, but another one caught my eye; it was on psychopaths (coincidence? I think not).
It was a very interesting and informative book. Most psychopaths aren't actually murderers, but they do cause pain in the lives of everyone around them, especially family and friends.
As for the death penalty, there have been too many cases (one would be too many) where an innocent person was put to death and only after they were dead were found to be innocent. I definitely want these people put where they can't continue to hurt people, and I think life in prison accomplishes that. I have a little less trouble with the death penalty for those who obviously are guilty, but still it seems like we are playing God to kill them. Two wrongs don't make a right. (stupid old cliche, I know)
But for many people on death row, the case isn't so clear-cut; as long as they are alive, if they are later found to be innocent, they can be released. But if they are killed and found to be innocent, you can't take that back. There are also issues of social justice involved, with people of color getting the death penalty far more than white people who commit the same crime; also poor people get it more because they can't afford an expensive attorney and for some reason we have more trouble putting rich people in prison than poor people. Okay, off my soapbox.
Have a nice summer day.
Karen
