Hi Holly,
I think yours is the mature attitude.
As each situation arises we respond naturally to that.
In Buddhism the created entity (a mixture of learnt behaviour, responses,
animal instincts and so on) is considered something of limiting use. The
innate nature does not have qualities tainted by self.
So people who 'grow spiritually' are missing the point - playing ego
development and alteration (for a wounded personality this may be
appropriate).
Spirituality is leaving behind as you say 'being authentic, good, "real,"
"who I am" or any other ideal'.
Less is more.
Nothing is everything.
