It may be pragmatism, but it is pessimism, just as David points out.

If "bad things happen to good people" is you mantra (I'm not saying that
it is, just making a point) then bad things *will* happen.

Focusing on fear always seems to create more fear. So, while Isadora's
husband is fulfilling a worthwhile career, to many people he is doing
just that...creating a focus on fear.
