Hee. Another New Mexico resident here. I live in a very common house, with
a very common back yard and garden, in a very uncommon part of the world. I
was NOT intrigued by New Mexico when I first came here. Then, I started to
learn how to see this 'other-worldly' world through others' eyes.
A friend of mine knew my tastes, and also knew I hadn't spent a lot of time
digging around, finding out what this place has to offer. He got approval,
and
took me to a salt lake on Zuni territory. This lake is in the middle of an
old
meteor crater. The salt was refined in the late '50s (I think, correct me
anyone
who knows more) for cattle licks and such. If you walk around the rusty
machinery,
around the end of the lake sitting in that huge dip, there's a cinder cone
of a
small volcano plume near the end. It extends about 150 feet up. After
climbing up
the plume, you can descend about 200 feet into the bottom of the volcano
plume,
to a (proposed bottomless) freshwater pool. About 50-100 feet across. Cold
even
in the summer.
As you sit in the bottom, looking up to the circle of luminescent-blue
cloudless
sky, you begin to realize how really timeless this place is. It was on a
major
trade route before my people even knew about Japan. There are fetishes and
jars
on the sides of the caldera; some a few years old, others hundreds and
hundreds
and hundreds.
The beauty isn't in what was created there; the beauty was in how the life
of
the land was allowed to speak so clearly. I don't know if I'll ever be able
to
get back there; I don't know if it's right to go there again. One of those
moments that mark you.
