i guess the idea - at least with Zen gardens - is, to manifest the essence of nature.
but yes, you can always discuss whether the natural nature isn't much more a manifestation of the essence than a sort of "styled" nature.
In my experience creating a Zen garden is a very intense experience for the one creating it and being involved with it. The effect is much less for the ones just visiting it.
