Dear Ann and List,
I think what Mark meant was simply discrimination in general in any path we
may choose. Basically, like, the sun feels this way and the moon feels
another way. Being able to tell the difference as to what things mean (like
magical names) helps us make better decisions. He didn't mean to talk down
to you. He's a Cabalist/alchemy kind of guy and that's just the way they
express themselves.
When I first came to the alternative spiritual community two years ago (I'm
still a new bee in this hive), I was overwhelmed by all the different
traditions, philosophies etc.. Mind you, it was only a couple months after
the cork popped off my K bottle and walking into a metaphysical
bookstore/meeting place where actual energy work was being done was like
having everything jump out at and around me. I went to a lot of classes,
asked a lot of questions and attended as many open circles and festivals as
I could. I'm glad I did because it helped me build a framework of personal
discrimination, or, educated discernment, if you will.
What are some of the things I learned? (Take this with a grain of salt as I
am, and will ever be, a student).
Be careful in widdershins circles that aren't personally guided when in an
early post awakening state. Counter clockwise work was done at one of the
first gatherings I attended and my mind went back to the time of my
"psychospiritual emergency." I started going through some heavy changes in
front of about a hundred people and it was very embarrassing. Changes are
good, but that one was not on the program of scheduled events. I can laugh
about it now, but at the time it was very difficult and had social
repercussions.
If you're a white American, approach Indigenous magic with the utmost
respect. It's very powerful. I'm sure everyone on this list has heard this a
million times, but where I live people who know the local history take this
very seriously. Here (LA) we've built an artificial metropolis literally
over the bones of the original people. Poltergeist activity is common in
these areas. And of course, if we do certain chants in those places we can
get our spiritual asses kicked (Jim Morrison had first hand experience with
this). A karmic bomb perhaps. Maybe it's time to pay the rent to Gia. Not
only ecologically, but spiritually.
Could the Chumash "curse" that was put on this part of California when one
of the last tribal families was driven off actually be a love bomb like the
one Mystess hinted at? Not something to be toyed with, but put into motion
for a reason? I only speculate here.
I've heard that in special places up north and to the east, the spiritual
rent seems to be paid (parts of New Mexico?) or the debt was never incurred
because the invading Europeans didn't destroy the land on a large scale and
had a different relationship with the local tribes (parts of Canada?). The
physical/ecological debt is another story and is, of course, international
in scope.
In these clear places, people of all races can chant and invoke the local
tradition with beautiful, harmonious results. But in this corner of the
South West, I've heard of folks getting freaked out. Feeling like they were
being stalked by an invisible animal or getting seriously disoriented would
be examples.
What I'm getting at here is that I believe that on one level there's a
genitic/geographic spiritual inheritance. One other levels of the spirit, it
doesn't matter who you are or where you are. As to the particulars ... where
one ends and the other begins ... I haven't a clue. Things are always
changing.
Sometimes I've walked through the wilderness alone and in one canyon it
seems like the old spirits are saying, "Welcome, traveler ... experience
with us!" But in the next canyon they're saying, "Leave us alone! ... keep
walking."
In America, we're not very good at leaving well enough alone ...in more
ways than one. We haven't cultivated that inner self discrimination that
lets us know whether the message is "welcome" or "leave."
We didn't leave. And perhaps now, Goddess and the Shaman are asking for the
long over due back rent. Paid in full.
With love by the crateful,
Paul
PS.
If there are any Australians or Euro-Africans on this list, I'd like to
hear your take on this. It looks like we've developed clumsiness and sacred
ground trampling into a lifestyle.
