Dear List,
The idea of evil is relative. The so-called 'seeds' (potential) for evil
exists along that of 'good'. This freedom to chose is what incarnation is
all about. In most estoteric traditions it is said that humans are superior
to angels because when the divine beings were created, they were each given a
special task, and only that task, and as such, had no free will. Only
humanity had the ability to chose, and as such would eventually be at the
head of the spiritual realm as it returned to Point of Origin (Kether, or
Crown in qabala).
With out the ability to chose, there is no learning.
This doesn't make it any easier to withstand, however, what is evil? In
National Socialism (NSDAP, or the Nazi Party) it was considered a crime not
to have 'Gottglaub' or belief in god, or a supreme being. One of the charges
that the Nazi's used to get the support of the Catholic and Lutheran Churches
was that the Communists were athiests, so at least with them (Nazis) the
churches would be full.
(side note: one did however have the right to refuse religion, the ideal
being the state religion of quasi-teutonic neo-pagan, nature worshipping
fascism..yeh, Hitler was a vegitarian, and Himmler loved astrology, and the
occult, natural healing was also in vogue)
One definition is that evil is really too much of a good thing, thus
creating an imbalance. Yet, the act of destruction that kills a small part
of a human body (a tumor) is a healing thing for the rest.
In qabala the final path one experiences is when good and evil merge and are
experienced as both being illusionary. In fact, many esoteric systems seek
to use the 'evil' (ie.chaotic, materialistic, and highly poweful) forces as a
means of growth. Only by confronting and synthesizing such an
idea-force-archetype do we learn what it means when we say 'all is one'.
So, evil I think is a bit more like pornography than anything else, very
hard to define but I know it when I see it.
Or as another wise man said, pornography is what the other guy likes, I
enjoy erotica!
