EXACTLY! Scuse shouting...you hit the nail on the head. My talented artist
friend - he paints in oils - plays guitar - keyboard and sax...and he just
thought I was potty and simply said..what if I hold up this orange
ball...you look at it...then I take it away...can you still see it?
Naturally I said No. He had no comprehension what it was like for me to
imagine rather than to "see" or visualise. He just thought there was
something wrong with me. His Dad is a recorded Jazz musician so maybe again
like you it's the artist or right brained functioning that suggests thos
ethat can. On tests I get a balanced right and left brain.
Apparently the figures for imagine or about 30% of the populus and 70% for
visualise. I din't post that to the list first because I'm curious if there
is a differential with list folk. I cannot be sure of these statistics
above. It really does make me want to write a booklet for schools and
professionals.
Interstingly I checked all this out with my familiy. My Mum does a bit
visualise. Brother not. Sister Yes. Dad not. Hmmm! Mind you one has to be
VERY careful I discovered phrasing the question. It's like asking somone
...do they walk if they had never seen or known walking. See what I mean?
> I wonder
>if mathematicians see in formulas?
Interesting. It's known that talented mathematicians switch the calculating
function from the left hemisphere to the right. i.e. most of us use left
for sums but good number crunchers move the function to the right brain.
This suggests they see holistically as it were. In fact there is a
wonderful thing called synasthesia (Sp) or a person who is a synesthete
(Sp) where the brain can wire numbers to pictures or for instance musical
notes to pictures. It's weel known but medical folk treat it as an
aberration I think wheras those that have it, find it wonderful. Imagine
going roller skating and listening to Brahms or Baroque music with your
Walkman. Now the notes take on a life of their own dancing maybe as
coloured balls with movements related to the actual notes/pitch/key. Must
be wonderful.
Another intersting (to me anyhow!) was the American twins that could
calculate if a number had a prime. It's detailed in Oliver Sachs book..the
man who mistook his wife for a hat. Same bloke that wrote the book
Awakenings which I think was made into a film. The Twins wre prime number
calculators and that is all they could do. Made machines look silly. They
were in a US hospital but then some idiot put them in separate hospitals
and they lost the ability and the only joy they knew. How cruel.
These kind of things remind me of the Rain Man when Hoffman played the
Autistic child and could "see" the number of matches spilled on the floor
in an instant.

What do you mean? So do you create images in your mind as if they are real?
> This hasn't
>really happened to me, but it has been close.
Or do you mean you do create an image of a future event as if it were real?
For me it's jus black save for the events I detailed.
There are quite a lot of sites that sports folk use visulisation for
winning races. They see themselves winning as a real picture in their
mind's eye. I think I've heard it called psychocybernetic images.
Hmmmm! Glad you like my query. In some ways I simply hope even if a poll
does not come out of it...it raises awareness that we are all different.
Hurrah! Still I'm genuinely fascinated by this subject area.
