America is a big, widely diverse place, like any country that covers a lot of
territory. Pretty region-o-centric too, with lots of media-driven
generalizations about each other. For example, living in the South, as I do,
I hear a lot of Jesse Helms/Tobacco/Andy Griffith/Beverly Hillbilly/Redneck
bullshit. Whatever. ;) Y'all.
I think one of the reason's American's are given a bad rap & hard time abroad
is obviously based on politics. The USA carries one of the bigger sticks in
the world, and is an easy target. And the US certainly has tinkered hard
with other's throughout the world. Certainly, America did not invent these
things, tho the government does seem to perpetuate them. Much as most every
other government on the planet that has enough military or economic might to
get in the ring.
We are fed a great deal of patriotic pabulum, and many choose to believe it
without further investigation. But this is true all over the world, anywhere
a government hopes to enforce it's version of reality, history, motivation.
Because of sheer size and relative isolation from the rest of the world
combined with the sophisticated media machine, a lot Americans have rare
opportunity to know how things are really done in the next state, much less
in Europe, South American, Africa, Asia.
It is very easy here to live in complete, relatively comfortable
obliviousness to the rest of the world, but we do have poverty, hunger,
violence, too. It just comes in different flavors than in some other places.
I think that people in other parts of the world have distorted views of what
America & Americans are about, and vice versa, based much upon no firsthand
experience otherwise. I guess I'm saying that there is plenty to hate, but
also plenty to love. Depends on who's doing the judging and why.
