During the 50s there was a book written *the Ugly American*. It was
about how american tourists visit other countries and expect the
natives to conform to American codes and customs and ridiculed them
when they didnt (listen...pause...this is important).
The millenial version of the Ugly American is Homer Simpson and his
family...doh! I wonder if Homer and his family has appeared on every
TV set on the globe. Bart Simpson has probably made it just by virtue
of being mass merchandised on every tshirt possible. Thank God, for
the divine right of american capitalism, we rule!
Homer is even the ugly american in his own community. He is self
centered, self serving, self absorbed which gets him into all kinds
of mishaps and being so misunderstood. (important point) He is
blithefully unaware of his own unawareness, convinced of his own self
importance and whines and makes excuses for his behaviour when he
gets caught. (become quiet and centered and FOCUS...this is *so*
important)
I also like the story of Gulliver's Travels by Swift (written in the
1800s by a satirist). Most people are just familiar with Gulliver and
his visits to the land of the little people and then the giants. They
arent that familiar with all the other places he went.
One such place was ruled by horses, whom he considered very
enlightened after he got over their 'horsiness'. Another was a race
of blind beings totalled covered by fur, a most maternal and nuturing
kind of beings who feed his heart deeply, once he got over his
prejudices of their appearance.
I dunno, I suppose I could go on, but does it really matter? So much
to say, but does anyone want to hear?
