I'm a Reiki II, with both Traditional and not-so-traditional training.
IMHO, you do not necessarily need a Reiki Master to attune you to Reiki, just
as you do not necessarily need a guru to receive shaktipat, tho it's not a
given. You don't have to pay a ton of money for Reiki training, tho some
folks think you should. Wasn't too long ago that it was common to pay
$10,000 for the Master level training and attunements.
Reiki energy is a different vibe than Kundalini, as chi and shaktipat are
different as well. Yes, they are all energy, but different sorts and
applications. Reiki is external "universal healing energy" channeled
through. Kundalini is your spiritual seed energy. Chi is the "working"
energy per se. These are very basic definitions that do not garner the full
spectrum to be sure!
There are many "flavors" of Reiki as well, as each Master/Teacher filters the
training and energy flow through their reality. It's said that Reiki energy
has the intelligence and practitioners are only vessels or channels for the
energy to flow. I've had the pleasure of receiving attunements from 3
different Masters - one remotely. Each experience shared certain elements,
but also reflected some of each Master's will or perception. Interesting
stuff.
For example, it was my Reiki II attunement that "activated" my kundalini.
Not uncommon, but not often discussed in terms of Reiki.
The Reiki symbols are just that - symbols of intention. Tho some argue that
they are actual methods of physically moving energy too.
Reiki attunements can blow your mind. Or not. While one may become
"sympathetic" to the Reiki energy without the attunements, it might not be as
healing as with the attunements for you.
The Reiki friend who got her panties in a wad is likely just peeved she paid
too much for what comes unbidden to others. Just as some might argue the
only way to deal with Kundalini is through years of yoga and meditation, or
Chi with years of martial arts practice, etc.
