I read your accounts with interest, and i empathize with your
experience. A similar episode touched me some years ago. The
warrior/destroyer potential within us all is quite powerful, dangerous,
and can come in many disguises. I'll give a try to explain:

In an instant, i relized the deep truth. My rightous hatred made me no
different from a Hitler in my willingness to kill massively for a "good
cause." It drove home the saying "Whom we hate, we imitate." I had no
doubt that Hitler and his inner circle felt the same rightous feelings
of total power. The experience (one pearl on the string) did teach me to
take compassionate care regarding power, and to realize that our
polarity is easily reversed near the extremes.

Religion (by definition, organized), of course, is a part of the fabric
of the ages. In darker moments, the followers of Hitler's warped
Christianity, the children of Israel, the followers of Allah, the
followers of the Roman Pope...all have been in pitched battle, one
against the other over the centuries. The organized eastern religions
are no exception...though i'm less familiar with the histories. Much of
history (and scripture) is the record of man defeating man in massive
battles. And great generals' stories, "his-story," are told by the
victors.
The great delema of modern time (post-1945) is that there now is
available the means to vanquish the very mother earth upon whose face we
all stand. Old news, but in the historical perspective, still in the
category of "current events." History teaches us the odds are good that
it could be easily done in the name of a "good and rightous" religious
cause. There are hopeful signs that this course might be altered, but
only time will tell. Populations of far-flung and devoted groups such as
of this list (and similar others) are a hopeful sign. I don't believe
this topic falls into the category of "paranoia" in the face of the
records of history. I do believe it is the great challenge of our age,
however, to somehow cool and soothe our collective natures and to
re-direct our distructive human tendencies to a better purpose.
