Namaste All, Kim,
A samskara is a samskara is a samskara/tendency.
A desire causes an impression in the mind, if the same
desire is indulged over a life or many lifetimes it
becomes deeply imbedded and reinforced. It becomes
part of the person. It may lay low like alcoholism,
waiting for the first drink, or it may need many
drinks to form the habit, depends on the strength of
the samskara. A person may be surprised by the
strength of the addiction or attachment samskaras.
I personally have had some experience with this, in
giving up, smoking, then alcohol( I was an habitual
drunk), then eating meat,( I was a big steak eater),
and then putting a limit on my desires. I have, as
Angelique ,was so kind to point out many other desires
of course. Much work to do, until they are like a
burnt crisp and can no longer sprout, causing rebirth.
Whether it is eating the ice cream or the way of
eating ,is immaterial in each case a samskara is
formed, or an existing one reinforced.
Instinct is nothing more than samskaras in memory for
instance, the difference being that they are shared by
the 'common mind', of that particular species.
So the difference beween a desire and an addiction is
really only academic, and due to exposure, time,
lifetimes and samskaras. An addiction is where the
desire has become an intense attachment, due to
constant indulgence.
Om Namah Sivaya, Tony.
The above mantra goes back into the mists of time, and
the word Siva or God/Consciousness, has different
translations. Little Siva is the God of destruction in
the trinity and is worshipped by Saivites. Big Siva is
another word for Nirguna Brahman, or Universal
Consciousness, which is the Ramana translation I
accept. Sakti or Sivatayi is the Goddess or Saguna Brahman.
