very nice post, El. I logged in thinking that today I'd post this question
to the list, and see what you all have to say.
You answered it all.
How this came about is that last night I was watching a Discovery clip on
Raja Raja, a Tamil king from Tanjavore, who spent the years of his rule
building enormous temples to Shiva.
The commentator was speculating over the rationale that could lead a king to
do this, and the clip showed a painting of the King and his Guru, and the
conclusion drawn was that the guru advised the king to propitiate the gods
by building temples to them, since he incurred terrible karma, as a king, by
indulging in wars and killing so many, and he could be reborn as a worm.The
king spent 40 years of his life erecting a gigantic compound, in which he
constructed gopurams, glorifying the Lord.The area encompasses that of the
Kremlin, The White House, the palace at Versailles, Buckingham Palace and a
few other minor monuments all put together, and the amount of stone put
together exceeds that used in the Pyramids.
The entire kingdom was devastated by muslim invaders, who disfigured what
they could not destroy, and looted the jewels from the idols.Today the
temples lie in disarray, with no patron to bring them back to life.
It took me a while to figure out the rationale that allowed piety to be
rewarded with brutality.We need to have less of mute visual symbols about
religion and spirituality, and more of internalised knowledge.What lessons
the inveders learnt I have not dwelt upon yet .:o))
