Why do you think that these things are mutually inconsistent? One can have
the experience of the Absolute and work on the purification of his being in
order to be able to embody the qualities of the Absolute.

I somehow don't see this as the logical consequence of the attitude that
one should improve oneself.

Just today I saw someone say the same thing on one Croatian newsgroup. And
he was utterly mistaken.
First of all, the highly evolved beings do not originate from the astral.
The astral is a very low level of consciousness, mostly of various
limitations that feed the ego trip and the emotional selfshness. But since
the highly evolved beings occasionally manifest themselves through the
physical matter, I see no reason why they shouldn't manifest themselves
through the astral matter; after all, the physical matter is even lower
than the astral one.
What is it, that makes a higher being higher? What is it, that makes one
being have a wider span of consciousness than the other one? The personal
development. One person has a wider consciousness than the other one,
because he has evolved more, grown higher. If you get to see such a person,
it's a great gift of mercy, not an obstacle. If someone, 2K years ago, saw
Jesus and talked to him, would that disqualify him as a spiritual seeker in
your experience, because he talked to a quite evolved being in the physical
matter?
Knowing Self is practically meaningless except as the knowledge of the
roots of all, it doesn't make you any better person than you were before,
and I know this to be a fact from my personal experience. And the highly
evolved beings can't be seen as some sort of an obstacle, because they are
in fact the only thing that can show a person his or her actual position on
the path. It is far easier to have the nirvikalpa samadhi experience, than
it is to understand the consciousness of Jesus or st. Theresa of Avilla or
Vivekananda. Far easier.

To me, it seems that _you_ think that of yourself. You have had the
experience of Self and now you think that you've seen everything there is
to be seen, and that everything else is merely a sort of a pitfall.
