hello, all
I'm a relative newcomer to the list, and have been watching with some time
the posts about SB, the questions on sexuality, the bit about the sexual
misconduct of the gurus and the attempts to put them in a frame of
understanding.
The main reason, metaphysically, not to do things that are innately
perceived to be wrong is the law of Karma. Your mind cannot but dwell on
actions commited towards enhancement of personal power,wealth and sensory
gratification , specially so if at the cost of others. Subsequent rebirth
would put you in a position of having to experience the other side of the
equation.There is a very clearly demarcated sense of ethics, right and
wrong, holy and evil, and "good" and "bad" in Indian society, which, after
all, is evolved upon the lines of social behaviour laid down in pretty
ancient texts, texts which are as much a part of the recieved wisdom as
those which makes yoga/tantra/mantra possible. We probably have the most
rigidly enforced norms of sexual chastity enforced, the temples of Khajuraho
notwithstanding. (Those came at a particular time in the evolution of Indian
society, when Tantra was in vogue).
The reason why sexual activity is discouraged is two-fold.. one is that
there is no question of evolution to a higher state of consciousness if one
is still prey to a predatory urge for sensual gratification. Monkeys spend
their life masturbating, and noone can claim that they were the most evolved
of all species .
The second reason lies in an understanding of Ayurveda, and the processes of
the body that reflect the evolution of the soul. It lies in the concept of
immortality. Sex reduces shukra in the body, which in turn reduces ojas.
Ojas is the glue that keeps mind, body and soul together. Simply put, too
little ojas, and the soul becomes detached from the mind/body complex.
Indeed, the mind itself becomes detached from the body. This is true of
any addiction, physical or physical , as a junkie would readily
testify.When the body is not maintained, the foundation of the entire
superstructure of mind-body-soul is gone.
Just as you may accept SB's exploitation of youngsters sexually as a sign
of God at work, and be non-judgemental about it, you could also accept your
sense of outrage over it equally as a sign of God's hand.
Life on this earth is evolving from strife and violence towards ease and
non-violence.There are some facets of life that are clearly untenable for
the continuation of existence and the growth of consciousness. Environmental
degradation, social restructuring , the growth of reason, the replacement of
war by trade; all of these are easily recognisable to be forces that are
"good". If you choose to keep quiet and not participate in these processes,
you surely have blown your chance to evolve at school.
Indians have been struggling with these concepts for centuries, and have
been attempting to mould each society of the times into an as humane a model
as possible. God is Love. Not Rape. Murder. Exploitation. Poverty. Crime.
Greed. Untruth. Etc. Etc.
Part of the problem regarding the sexual exploitation of novices by Gurus
in Western society lies in the emphasis it lays on Tantra as a means to
Godhead. If you play with fire, you will get burnt.
On a spiritual path, as on any other, it is essential to look out for
oneself, and take adequate safeguards.An overdose of rational scepticism has
lead to the search for more enduring values in more modern socities. It is
imperative that one should not go overboard the other extreme and give up
questioning altogether. Discrimination is essential for happiness.
Dismaying experiences can stress the mind, which can then become too
distressed to achieve much integration with the body and soul. Without
integration, there is very little chance that you can awake Kundalini, or
even if you can do so, you will live to tell the tale.
An individual's ethics are picked up from parents, society and the
scriptures. All Scriptures are recieved wisdom, taken by millions to be
God's word. Happiness comes from the observance of rules, applied
intelligently.There is no way that you can go on against the accumulated
wisdom of your elders in toto. This is a major thrust in our society,
because, after all, the vedas were also a part of the accumulated wisdom.
There were no bookstores for the intervening two and a half millenia.
Adapt mores to keep pace with the faster pace of life, yes. Choose
intelligently. Mix and match. But you cannot negate all notions of love,
gentleness, fidelity and social courtesy as so much bunkum, a carryover from
the Dark Ages, move into a new era of licentiousness and justify it in the
name of spirituality. Tantra does not work that way either.
The Sanatana Dharma is very clear.. you are your own tool to spirtual
awareness. There are many paths, but a common goal. The laborer lugging
bricks on his head, living on two chapatties a day and scrounging all his
earnings to keep his family alive is probably more spiritual than a busload
of gurus put together. The gurus are mostly adepts in disciplines that help
in the integration of the individual. The guru is not in the business of
helping individuals live.. gurus are just the tool bearers. It is this
attitude of theirs that has lead to a far lesser degree of social coherence
in Indian society, than there is in yours.
For Gods sake, don't be taken in by fakers. Examine yours guru more
stringently.
