You are touching a very important point here... void creates in many just
the negative image you describe. It's the void which is placed in the 3+1
dimensional space-time continuum, only with no "things" within. It's bleak
and cold for the warm human hearts to think of. I like to think of the The
Void as something where there is neither space or time, which doesn't have
the attribute of not-containing-something, but rather having the attribute
of not having attributes (Error: bad recursion, core dumped), including
the attribute of containing (which wouldn't make much sense without space
or time in the first place).
